Angie Nixon Wins Florida Democratic Senate Primary
State Representative Angie Nixon defeated Alex Vindman in the Florida Democratic Senate primary and will face Republican incumbent Ashley Moody in the general election.
Florida State Representative Angie Nixon won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, defeating Alex Vindman by more than 12 points. Despite being outspent 16 to 1, Nixon secured the victory as part of a broader wave of progressive wins in the state, including primary victories for Anthony Nieves in House District 47 and Kyandra Darling in House District 62.
U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Nixon, describing her win as evidence that organized people can defeat organized money. Sanders also provided the sole endorsement in the state for Kyandra Darling. Matthew Grocholske, president of the Progressive Caucus of Florida, stated that these results show a voter preference for progressive messaging over the desires of the Florida Democratic Party's institutional leadership.
Nixon, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, prioritizes issues such as Medicare for All and the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. She now prepares to face Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody in the general election this fall. Moody was appointed to the seat in January 2025 by Governor Ron DeSantis after Marco Rubio joined the president's Cabinet.
