Harris Kupperman Warns of Imminent AI Economic Reckoning
Harris Kupperman predicts a wave of AI bankruptcies and is repositioning Praetorian Capital's portfolio toward cash and government bonds.
Harris Kupperman, founder of Praetorian Capital, warned in his Q3 investor letter that the artificial intelligence sector faces an imminent economic reckoning. He argues that the current AI business model is unsustainable and unlikely to reach profitability, stating that the industry would need revenue equal to several percent of the U.S. GDP just to break even on invested capital.
Kupperman predicts a phase of rationalization that will trigger a wave of bankruptcies. He expects this collapse to begin with neocloud providers and eventually extend to large frontier AI labs, drawing a historical parallel to the repeated bankruptcies of the 19th-century railroad industry.
In response to these risks and the potential for a broader market crash, Kupperman is repositioning the Praetorian Capital portfolio. The firm is increasing its cash holdings and shifting investments into precious metals and U.S. government bonds.
