Apple and Justice Department Discuss Antitrust Lawsuit Settlement
Apple Inc. and the U.S. Department of Justice are in active discussions to settle a 2024 lawsuit alleging the company monopolized the smartphone market.
The U.S. Department of Justice and Apple Inc. have entered early, active discussions to settle a 2024 antitrust lawsuit. Originally filed under the Biden administration and supported by several states, the lawsuit alleges that Apple violated antitrust laws by monopolizing the smartphone market and suppressing competition across digital wallets, cloud streaming, messaging solutions, super apps, and smartwatches.
Apple has reportedly made multiple offers throughout the year to resolve the case. Under the current Trump administration, Justice Department official Stanley Woodward has pushed for settlements in cases initiated by the previous administration to reduce taxpayer costs and provide faster relief to consumers.
While Apple has introduced some changes, such as opening its NFC payment chip and supporting RCS messaging, it continues to restrict the Apple Watch from operating with non-Apple devices. No trial date has been established, and a final settlement remains uncertain.
