Aga Syed Ruhullah Resigns from Lok Sabha and National Conference

Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi resigned from his parliamentary seat and the National Conference, citing betrayal of election promises regarding Article 370.

Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi resigned from both the Lok Sabha and the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference on November 3, 2026. He formalized the decision during a rally at Behisht-e-Zehra Park in Budgam, coinciding with the death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi Mustafa.

Mehdi accused the party leadership, specifically President Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, of treating Jammu and Kashmir as a family estate and betraying voters. He cited the failure to restore Article 370, release prisoners, and provide free electricity as primary reasons for his exit, describing the party as a "deceitful, corrupt organisation." While he denied allegations of horse-trading, he hinted at the possible formation of a new political movement to restore regional dignity.

The resignation leaves the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat vacant, necessitating a by-election within six months. Within the National Conference, some ministers urged Mehdi to return, while others asserted the party remains strong and unaffected by his departure. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party distanced itself from the turmoil, denying reports that it was coordinating with disgruntled lawmakers to destabilize the government.
