India Leverages National Power Grid to Attract Data Center Giants

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on December 15, 2025, that India has emerged as a preferred global destination for Global Capability Centres and data centers. He attributed this growth to the country's 500-gigawatt integrated national power grid, which provides the redundancy and load-management capabilities essential for high-demand digital infrastructure.

This infrastructure advantage has secured massive commitments from major technology firms. Microsoft Corporation plans to invest $17.5 billion in AI infrastructure and sovereign capabilities, while Google LLC is allocating $15 billion for a gigawatt-scale data center and AI hub in Andhra Pradesh. Amazon.com Inc. has committed $7 billion over 14 years to expand its footprint in Telangana.

Goyal noted that since 2014, India's energy sector has seen a 46-fold increase in solar capacity and a 2.5-fold increase in wind energy. To maintain 24/7 clean baseload power, the government is pursuing the SHANTI Bill, which would enable private sector participation in nuclear energy and the use of Small Modular Reactors. Despite these gains, some experts warn that the scale of development could strain freshwater supplies and increase pollution from power generation.
