Honda Outsources Vehicle Platform Development to Tata Technologies

Honda Motor Co. has outsourced the end-to-end development of a new vehicle platform to Tata Technologies Ltd., marking the first time the Japanese automaker has entrusted an Indian engineering services firm with a core platform. The new architecture will support multiple models across internal-combustion, hybrid, and battery-electric powertrains.

This strategic shift follows a ¥423.9 billion net loss for the year ended March 2026, the company's first annual loss since 1948. The partnership is part of a "Triple Half" target intended to slash development costs, time, and workload. Honda aims to introduce a new family of cars in India starting in 2028, utilizing the country as a manufacturing and export hub for Latin America and Southeast Asia to recover a market share that has fallen below 2%.

CEO Toshihiro Mibe stated the company would utilize external resources more strategically to adapt to global market uncertainty. While Honda declined to discuss the specific arrangement with Tata Technologies, it noted it is "always considering" outside partnerships to improve competitiveness. Shares of Tata Technologies rose approximately 7% on August 6, 2026, following the announcement.
