Allie K. Miller Warns 90% of Employees Underutilize AI

During the Fortune Brainstorm AI conference in San Francisco, Allie K. Miller, CEO of Open Machine and former executive at IBM and Amazon Web Services, stated that approximately 90% of employees underutilize artificial intelligence. She argued that most workers treat AI as a microtasker, using it primarily as a glorified search engine or for polishing emails, which renders corporate AI subscriptions nearly worthless and hinders productivity.

To realize actual enterprise value, Miller proposed a transition toward Minimum Viable Autonomy. This approach requires leaders to provide goals and boundaries for AI instead of step-by-step instructions. She recommended the use of agent protocols to categorize tasks by risk level, predicting that AI will soon be capable of working autonomously for more than eight consecutive hours.

Miller concluded that organizations continuing to treat AI as a mere tool rather than a companion, delegate, or teammate will struggle to remain competitive over the next decade.
