Multicultural Business Coalition Sues Mayor Mamdani Over City Grocery Stores

The Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), an immigrant-led nonprofit representing 50 chambers of commerce, has voted to sue New York City to block a $70 million plan by Zohran Mamdani to establish five taxpayer-funded supermarkets. The initiative aims to lower food costs for residents by offering 30 percent discounts on staples such as produce, meat, eggs, and milk, potentially saving New Yorkers approximately $1,000 annually.

Opponents, including the MBC and the United Bodegas of America, argue the plan creates unfair competition for mom-and-pop shops and bodegas. Because the city-run stores will be located on municipal property, they will not pay rent, further disadvantaging private retailers. The MBC has given the mayor's office three weeks to grant a meeting before proceeding with the lawsuit and intends to raise $1 million to fund the legal challenge.

Mayor Mamdani has defended the supermarkets as a core part of his affordability agenda, stating that the stores will not compete with bodegas by excluding items like alcohol, cigarettes, and lottery tickets. To prevent the resale of discounted goods for profit, the city is considering implementing tracking measures. The first store is scheduled to open in the Bronx's Hunts Point neighborhood in late 2027, with a second location projected for East Harlem's La Marqueta in 2029.
