New Zealand General Election Leaves Opportunity Party as Kingmaker

The New Zealand Labour Party leads final polls as the country votes in a tight race that may leave the centrist Opportunity Party holding the balance of power.

New Zealand is holding a general election concluding November 8, 2026, with final polling showing a tight race between the two major parties. The New Zealand Labour Party, led by Chris Hipkins, leads the final pre-election poll at 30.7%, while the New Zealand National Party, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, follows at 26.4%.

Both major parties have seen a decline in support, falling below 30% amid voter frustration over unemployment and living costs. This shift has positioned the centrist Opportunity Party, led by Qiulae Wong, as a potential kingmaker. Polling the party at 5.1%, the Opportunity Party could hold the balance of power if it crosses the 5% parliamentary threshold. While Wong is open to working with either side, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has ruled out a post-election deal with the party.

Campaigns have focused on tactical voting to create parliamentary overhangs. Te Pāti Māori is encouraging supporters to win Māori electorates while directing party votes to Labour or the Greens. Conversely, right-wing campaigns are urging electorate votes for the New Zealand National Party while party-voting for ACT or New Zealand First. Final results are expected to take three weeks due to special vote counting, with government formation potentially extending into December.
