China Ramps Up Military Sorties Around Taiwan
China increased aircraft and naval incursions around Taiwan from June 1 to June 4, prompting Taiwan to conduct submarine sea trials.
Chinese military activity around Taiwan intensified between June 1 and June 4, 2026, characterized by a surge in aircraft sorties and naval presence. The Ministry of National Defence, Republic of China reported that by 6 a.m. on June 4, 32 People's Liberation Army aircraft sorties, 10 navy vessels, and five official ships were detected, with 25 aircraft crossing the median line into multiple Air Defense Identification Zones.
This escalation follows a steady increase throughout the week. On June 3, Taiwan detected 18 aircraft sorties and eight navy vessels, with 14 sorties crossing the median line. Earlier activity on June 1 and June 2 included various PLA aircraft, navy vessels, and China Coast Guard patrols east of the territory.
In response to the heightened pressure, Taiwan launched its first domestically built submarine from the Port of Kaohsiung for its 15th sea trial, which includes submerged-navigation tests. These developments occur as the United States monitors the region; President Donald Trump previously stated the U.S. would work on the Taiwan problem following a meeting with President Xi Jinping.
