UK Parliamentary Committee Slams Inconsistent China Strategy

A parliamentary committee accused the UK government of lacking a coherent China strategy, warning that reactive policies jeopardize national security and commercial opportunities.

A report from the Commons business, innovation, science and trade select committee has accused the Government of the United Kingdom of lacking a coherent strategy toward China. The committee claims ministers are making up policy as they go along, resulting in a reactive approach that jeopardizes national security and risks leaving the UK's strategy to be dictated by Washington or Beijing.

The report highlights inconsistent decision-making, citing the emergency takeover of British Steel from Chinese owners and the blocking of a £1.5bn wind energy plant by Ming Yang. To manage these risks, the committee recommends establishing a register of high-risk firms and creating a red zone for off-limits industries. It also suggests the UK align with European Union tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles to prevent isolation from the EU market.

Opposition figures described the findings as damning, with some accusing the government of allowing Beijing to dictate terms. The government rejected the report's conclusions, maintaining that its approach balances economic growth with national security and remains consistent.
