German Wholesale Prices Jump 6.8% Amid Middle East Conflict
The Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported a 6.8% surge in wholesale prices for August 2026, driven by rising energy and raw material costs.
The Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported that wholesale prices increased by 6.8% in August 2026 compared to the previous year, the fastest growth rate in more than three years. The agency attributed the surge primarily to the conflict in Iran and the Middle East, which drove up costs for raw materials and energy products.
Petroleum products experienced the sharpest increase at 36.1% year-on-year, while chemical products rose by 13.6%. These figures follow a monthly increase of 0.9% and contributed to a broader August inflation rate of 2.9%, which remains above the 2% target set by the European Central Bank.
In response to these rising energy costs and upwardly revised inflation forecasts, the European Central Bank raised interest rates for the second time this year. Isabel Schnabel, an executive board member of the bank, described the recent energy price increases as "quite concerning."
