Reddit and Digital Freedom Project Challenge Australia Social Media Ban

Reddit and the Digital Freedom Project are challenging Australia's social media ban for users under 16 in the High Court over freedom of communication concerns.

The High Court of Australia is hearing a legal challenge from Reddit and the Digital Freedom Project against the national ban on social media for users under 16. The challenge, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, argues that the law impermissibly burdens the implied freedom of political communication by blocking teenagers from accessing news and engaging with political figures.

The Australian government defends the legislation as a necessary tool to protect children from harmful platform features, including infinite scroll and algorithms. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reported that over 5 million accounts have already been suspended across 10 different platforms. However, the government is currently contesting the legal standing of the Digital Freedom Project to bring the case.

While the court proceedings continue, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant is investigating whether major platforms, including Meta and TikTok, are complying with the ban. Platforms found in breach of the law face potential fines of nearly $100 million per violation.
