US and India Launch AI Task Force and Trade Pact

The United States and India have accelerated their strategic technology cooperation through a series of high-level diplomatic and industry initiatives. Centered on artificial intelligence, the partnership includes the launch of a Board AI Task Force by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) to drive responsible AI deployment for nearly two billion people. This effort coincides with the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, where the USISPF is leading a record delegation of over 120 American CEOs and technology leaders.

Parallel to AI efforts, the two nations have deepened economic ties via a finalized trade agreement. This deal reduces US tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%, supporting a bilateral trade target of $500 billion by 2030. To further this goal, India expressed intent to purchase $500 billion in US energy, aircraft, and technology products over five years. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently met with US Ambassador Sergio Gor to focus specifically on semiconductor and electronics manufacturing supply chain resilience.

Strategic dialogues in Silicon Valley and a joint report by the Special Competitive Studies Project and Observer Research Foundation emphasize the need for a non-hierarchical partnership. These discussions advocate for a combined AI stack to counter authoritarian models and export digital infrastructure to the Global South. Participants underscored a triple helix approach, integrating government, industry, and academia to manage the labor market shifts caused by AI.
