DK Shivakumar Leads First Karnataka Cabinet Meeting in Mangaluru

Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar led the first-ever Karnataka Cabinet meeting in Mangaluru on September 18, 2026. The session, relocated from Bengaluru following a proposal by Health Minister U. T. Khader, served as a state outreach initiative to address the development of the coastal and Malnad regions. The day began with an open-top bus procession and prayers at the Kadri Manjunatha Temple before the cabinet convened at Praja Soudha in Padil to discuss 17 agenda items.

Central to the discussions was the goal of transforming the 340-kilometer coastline into a tourism hub, with Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara citing Kerala and Goa as benchmarks. Shivakumar stated that the government intends to utilize local human and natural resources to curb migration and prioritize people's lives over politics. Other key priorities included the implementation of legally viable infrastructure projects, a support policy for local youth, and the official recognition of the Tulu language.

While the meeting focused on regional growth, Minister K. H. Muniyappa noted that the government continues to prioritize social welfare infrastructure, including residential schools for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Most Backward Classes. Minister H. C. Balakrishna characterized the event as a historic first, stating that the Chief Minister aims to develop Mangaluru similarly to Bangalore.
