AI Infrastructure Investment Projected to Reach 769 Billion Dollars
McKinsey projects AI infrastructure investment will surge to 769 billion dollars in 2026, amid rising safety concerns and resource shortages.
McKinsey & Company projects that investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and model architectures will reach approximately 769 billion dollars in 2026. This represents a more than fivefold increase from the 145 billion dollars invested in 2025, according to the firm's Technology Trends Outlook 2026 report.
Capital flows are being driven by major industry players. SoftBank Group launched an 11 billion dollar bond offering to fund a further 10 billion dollar investment in OpenAI, while Nvidia Inc. is in discussions regarding a potential investment of up to 10 billion dollars in Anthropic.
The investment boom coincides with growing safety warnings from AI developers. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the global AI community to slow the release of new capabilities to address safety risks. Simultaneously, OpenAI has advocated for the implementation of international technical standards and mandatory national safety requirements.
McKinsey warns that this rapid expansion may be constrained by shortages in capital, talent, and energy. The report notes that AI data centers in the United States could consume as much electricity by 2030 as the state of California does currently.
