Nippon Steel Invests 900 Million Euros in Slovakia Plant

Nippon Steel announced a 900 million euro investment to construct an electric arc furnace and a new oxygen plant at its steelworks in Kosice, Slovakia. The project is supported by a 350 million euro subsidy from the European Union Modernisation Fund, following a subsidy agreement signed with the Slovak government on September 15.

The electric arc furnace is designed for an annual capacity of 1.6 million metric tons and is scheduled to begin operations in 2030. The oxygen plant is expected to be operational by 2029. These upgrades are intended to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve the long-term competitiveness of the facility.

As part of the transition, the current U. S. Steel Kosice operation will become a direct subsidiary of Nippon Steel. The facility will be renamed Nippon Steel Slovakia on October 1, 2026.
