Nancy Pelosi Denies Knowing Joe Biden's Cognitive Decline Before Debate

Nancy Pelosi claims she only learned of Joe Biden's cognitive struggles during the June 2024 debate and faults his inner circle for withholding information.

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stated during a Politico summit in Sacramento that she was unaware of Joe Biden's cognitive decline prior to the June 27, 2024, presidential debate. Pelosi asserted that the debate was the moment she and others learned of his struggles, arguing that Biden's family and staff should have acted on that information sooner.

Pelosi detailed private interactions where she questioned Biden's polling and campaign conduct, suggesting a better strategy was needed to win the White House. She admitted to suggesting that Biden undergo cognitive testing and release the results to reassure the public, to which Biden reportedly responded that he is tested every day by the demands of his job.

These claims contrast with reports in Christopher Whipple's 2025 book "Uncharted," which alleges Pelosi expressed being startled by how much Biden had aged in May 2024. Critics have characterized her denials as non-credible gaslighting, arguing the decline was evident to all observers. Pelosi maintained that while she saw the president frequently as Speaker, she only saw him about three times in the year following her term, noting he appeared perfectly fine while awarding her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
