Azerbaijan Expands Energy Ties With Germany and BP

Azerbaijan is partnering with Siemens Energy and BP to export natural gas and develop offshore wind corridors to enhance European energy security.

Azerbaijan is expanding its energy partnerships with German firms and BP to integrate its hydrocarbon and renewable resources into European markets. During the German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference in Baku, Deputy Energy Minister Elnur Soltanov stated that German companies Uniper, SEFE, and VNG are already purchasing Azerbaijani natural gas. Azerbaijan intends to leverage 157 gigawatts of offshore wind potential in the Caspian Sea to bolster European energy security.

Siemens Energy offered technology and expertise to develop these renewable projects and establish green energy corridors linking East and West. The strategy involves multiple routes, including the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor and links through Georgia, Nakhchivan, and Türkiye.

Simultaneously, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced an expanded partnership with BP. This cooperation includes the launch of associated gas production at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli field and the Shah Deniz Compression project. The two parties are also pursuing decarbonization efforts, including the transition of the Sangachal Terminal to clean energy and the commissioning of the Shafag Solar Power Plant next year.
