UAW President Shawn Fain Faces Federal Criminal Investigation

The United States Attorney’s Office in Detroit has opened a criminal investigation into Shawn Fain, the President of the United Auto Workers, following accusations of misconduct and abuse of authority. The probe stems from findings by federal monitor Neil Barofsky, who accused Fain of establishing a pattern of retaliation against union board members, including a coordinated effort to discredit Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock.

Fain denies the allegations, asserting that the federal monitor is pursuing charges based on a political disagreement regarding the union's support for a cease-fire in Gaza. He claims the investigation is a politically motivated attempt to rig the upcoming union election, which is scheduled in two months.

Internal opposition to Fain has grown as the election approaches. Presidential candidate Tricia Geiger and UAW Vice President Rich Boyer have accused Fain of bullying and corruption. Boyer specifically alleged that Fain retaliated against him after he refused to approve personal financial benefits for the president. Despite these legal and internal challenges, Fain points to his record of securing significant contracts and expanding union membership during his tenure.
