EPA Fast-Tracks AI Infrastructure Construction Permits

The United States Environmental Protection Agency proposed new measures on Tuesday to accelerate the construction of artificial intelligence infrastructure, specifically targeting data centers and power plants. The proposal modifies the interpretation of the Clean Air Act's New Source Review program to allow companies to begin certain construction activities before obtaining formal air permits.

Under the new guidelines, companies may proceed with work that does not involve emissions units that release air pollution, such as the installation of cement pads. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that the existing permitting process has been a "broken system" and an obstacle to innovation and growth for years.

This regulatory shift is part of a broader Trump administration strategy to secure American dominance in the AI technological arms race against China. The government aims to rapidly expand energy supplies to meet the increasing electricity demands required for AI data processing.
