Assam Allocates Rs 2,579 Crore to Boost Power Sector

Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented the Assam State Budget for the 2026-27 financial year, prioritizing the power sector with a proposed allocation of Rs 2,579 crore. The government of Himanta Biswa Sarma plans a total investment of Rs 77,353 crore to bridge the gap between electricity demand and supply.
Infrastructure goals include the development of a 3,200 MW thermal power project, a 70 MW solar project in Bilasipara, and a 2,700 MW Pumped Storage Project. The state aims to generate 3,000-4,000 MW of solar power by 2030 and will spend Rs 1,200 crore to replace aging power lines.
BJP spokesperson Manas Sarania stated these initiatives are designed to eliminate dependence on other states for electricity and establish Assam as a "Green Energy Hub of North-East India". Sarania noted that the power sector serves as the principal driving force behind economic growth and that the current energy ecosystem is inspiring confidence among investors.
