Matthew McConaughey Urges Voters to Support Independent Candidates

Actor Matthew McConaughey released a video urging voters to support independent candidates in the 2026 midterms to force political centrism in Congress.

Actor Matthew McConaughey released a six-minute video on X and Instagram urging American voters to support independent candidates in the 2026 midterm elections. He argued that independent voters, who represent approximately 45 percent of the U.S. population according to Gallup data, should be viewed as potential winners rather than spoiler candidates or fence-sitters.

McConaughey asserted that electing a small group of independent lawmakers would create a permanent check on the two-party system, forcing Republicans and Democrats to abandon extreme policies in favor of centrist legislation. While he resides in Texas, where Ken Paxton and James Talarico are competing for a Senate seat, he declined to endorse a specific candidate, stating he endorses "fairness and reality."

Former Senator Joe Manchin backed the appeal, noting that independents could return power to the political middle. Manchin, who founded the Independent Leadership Council to recruit and fund independent candidates, also suggested that McConaughey possesses the intelligence and charisma to potentially serve as president of the United States.

The appeal drew backlash from social media critics who argued that splitting the vote could benefit Republican interests during a critical political moment. McConaughey dismissed the notion that an independent vote is wasted, characterizing independents as the majority maker and the actual leverage in government.
