Bangladesh Resumes Wheat Imports From India To Curb Inflation

The Government of Bangladesh is resuming wheat imports from India to stabilize domestic flour prices following supply disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Government of Bangladesh is resuming wheat imports from India to combat rising domestic food prices and supply disruptions stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war in the Black Sea region. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh reported that the price of refined wheat flour in Dhaka has increased by 17% over the past month, sparking concerns regarding inflation and food affordability.

India previously restricted wheat exports in May 2022 to protect its own food security after a heat-hit crop. However, the Government of India began allowing limited exports through specified quotas in 2026. Most of the new shipments to Bangladesh will be transported by rail, with expected delivered prices ranging between $305 and $326 per tonne.

This trade resumption coincides with efforts to stabilize bilateral relations between the two nations. Ties had been strained during the tenure of the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, but Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has signaled an interest in rebuilding engagement with India since his appointment in February.
