Atari Reports Record Revenue and Return to Profitability
Atari achieved its highest annual revenue in over a decade by acquiring studios and intellectual property and leveraging nostalgia-driven franchises.
The Paris-based video game developer Atari reported annual revenue of €56 million ($65 million), the company's highest level in more than ten years. The firm returned to operational profitability by focusing on nostalgia-driven franchises and an aggressive acquisition strategy involving both studios and intellectual property.
Over the last year, Atari increased its ownership stake in the Swedish publisher Thunderful to 97% and purchased the developer Hipster Whale for $29.3 million. Additionally, the company acquired the intellectual property rights to five Ubisoft titles, including Child of Eden and Grow Home. These moves contributed to a 67.7% increase in games revenue to €46.1 million and an 83% rise in hardware revenue to €7.3 million.
Excluding the impact of Thunderful, the company's current operating income was €0.9 million, reversing a loss of €0.8 million from the previous year. CEO Wade Rosen stated the company is reaching operational profitability for the first time in several years.
