California Coastal Commission Settles Political Bias Lawsuit with SpaceX

The California Coastal Commission settled a lawsuit with Space Exploration Technologies Corp. and its CEO Elon Musk after the company accused the state agency of political bias and discrimination. The dispute originated from the commission's opposition to expanding the Falcon 9 rocket launch schedule at the Vandenberg Space Force Base, a proposal supported by the United States Air Force.

SpaceX alleged that commission members violated constitutional rights to free speech and due process by basing their regulatory votes on the political views of Musk. As part of the settlement, the commission apologized for making improper statements regarding Musk's beliefs and agreed to waive the requirement for a coastal development permit for the launch program.

Under the terms of the agreement, the commission committed to excluding perceived political speech, beliefs, or labor practices from its future regulatory considerations. Although the case was permanently dismissed without an admission of liability, the agency stated it remains concerned about the impact of increased launches on coastal habitats, public access, and sonic booms.
