USFK Commander Sparks Row Over South Korea Border Remarks

General Xavier Brunson caused a diplomatic dispute after suggesting South Korea's territory begins at the DMZ's southern fence line rather than the Military Demarcation Line.

General Xavier Brunson, commander of U.S. Forces Korea and the United Nations Command, triggered a diplomatic dispute during a seminar in Washington by stating that South Korea begins at the southern fence line of the Demilitarized Zone. This boundary, known as the Southern Limit Line, sits approximately two kilometers south of the Military Demarcation Line, which South Korea recognizes as its actual border.

South Korean officials and lawmakers condemned the remarks as an infringement on territorial sovereignty, citing the existence of the village of Daeseong-dong north of the southern fence as evidence of their jurisdiction. The Ministry of National Defense of South Korea lodged protests with the United States, while the South Korean Army Chief of Staff described the wording as inappropriate.

In response to the backlash, the United Nations Command issued a statement clarifying that South Korea's sovereignty is not in question. The South Korean Defense Ministry further attempted to mitigate the row by characterizing the comments as Brunson's personal opinion.

Beyond the border dispute, Brunson drew additional criticism for suggesting that new standards are necessary before the transfer of wartime operational control to Seoul. These comments have raised concerns that the South Korean government's goal to achieve this transfer by 2028 could be delayed.
