Illinois Republicans Launch Campaigns Focused on State Affordability

Republican candidates launched their November election campaigns at the Illinois State Fair, framing the vote as a referendum on Governor JB Pritzker's economic policies.

Illinois Republicans launched their campaigns for the November 3 election during the party's designated day at the State Fair in Springfield. Gubernatorial nominee Darren Bailey and lieutenant governor candidate Aaron Del Mar centered their messaging on affordability, public safety, and education, specifically citing high property taxes and rising electric bills. The GOP strategy explicitly distances the ticket from national politics and the unpopularity of Donald Trump, urging voters to focus on state leadership in Springfield rather than Washington.

This approach contrasts with Democratic efforts to frame the election as a referendum on Trump. While Republican Party Chairman Bob Grogan characterized the contest as common sense versus communism, the GOP faces a steep financial climb; Governor JB Pritzker recently contributed $65 million to his own campaign, while Bailey has only a few hundred thousand dollars. Pritzker's campaign also targeted Bailey over his school's curriculum, which suggests humans and dinosaurs coexisted.

Legislative leaders Tony McCombie and John Curran are pushing to end the party's superminority status by capitalizing on Democratic scandals. McCombie accused House Speaker Emanuel Welch of failing to hold members accountable following sexual harassment allegations against former Representative Harry Benton. Additionally, the House Republican Organization is demanding a response to harassment and drug-supply allegations against Democratic Representative Amy Briel, who maintains the claims were previously found to be without merit by the Legislative Inspector General.
