Transit Agencies Offer Free Rides for Election Day Voters
Multiple public transit agencies across Virginia and Iowa are waiving fares on November 3 to help voters reach their polling locations.
Public transportation agencies in Virginia and Iowa are providing free rides on November 3 to reduce transportation barriers for voters on Election Day.
In Virginia, BRITE Bus, administered by the Central Shenandoah Valley Planning Commission, is waiving fares on all local routes. The service covers polling places across all wards in Staunton and Waynesboro, as well as several precincts in Augusta County. Kayla Dixon, a community outreach and engagement specialist for the agency, stated the initiative was started to reduce barriers to accessing the polls.
Similarly, the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) is offering free bus rides throughout the day in Des Moines, Iowa. Other Iowa transit providers, including Cy-Ride in Ames and all agencies within the Quad Cities Area, have implemented similar free transit initiatives. DART officials advised voters to use the Iowa Secretary of State's website to identify their polling sites and the MyDART app to plan their trips.
