FSSAI Forces Food Companies to Withdraw Misleading Health Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued over 150 notices to food companies to remove misleading health, nutrition, and trade claims.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a regulatory crackdown on misleading food advertisements and labeling, issuing more than 150 notices to food business operators. The enforcement drive targets false health and nutrition claims, as well as trade name violations, and extends to 12 e-commerce companies and over 30 food-service establishments, including major restaurant chains.
Several major companies have already taken corrective action. Mondelez India Foods Private Limited withdrew health and nutrient-comparison claims for Bournvita from advertisements and e-commerce platforms. Amway India Enterprises Pvt Ltd removed the term "100%" from its coconut oil packaging—following a May 2025 FSSAI advisory against using the term to imply absolute purity—and discontinued the "Energy Drink" label for its XS product range.
Other affected operators include Sapien Labs, which withdrew all flagged claims and advertisements, and Juza Foods, which agreed to remove immunity and bone-support claims from its baby food products. Juza Foods also shut down its website after the regulator found it lacked a necessary e-commerce license. Additionally, Vichi Agro Products Pvt Ltd saw its products delisted from Flipkart after receiving a notice regarding a misleading trade name. The FSSAI noted that major operators have taken prompt corrective action following these notices.
