London Mayor Randall Weddle Resigns After Court Ruling
London Mayor Randall Weddle resigned effective July 12, 2026, after the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled he was ineligible for office due to residency and misconduct.
Randall Weddle announced his resignation as mayor of London, Kentucky, effective July 12, 2026. The move follows a ruling by the Kentucky Court of Appeals, which reversed a lower court order that had previously reinstated Weddle after the London City Council removed him from office in September 2025.
The Kentucky Court of Appeals determined that Weddle was ineligible for office because his primary residence is located in Keavy, outside city limits. Additionally, the court affirmed the council's original removal for misconduct. These charges included failing to publish ordinances, neglecting to fill Ethics Board vacancies, and signing documents to mortgage city property for a $5 million fairground rebuilding loan without council approval.
The Laurel Circuit Court had initially found the grounds for removal insufficient, but the appellate court ruled that council approval for the loan transaction was required by law. In response to the appellate decision, the London City Council cancelled a special meeting scheduled for July 10, which was intended to request that the Kentucky Attorney General remove Weddle from office.
Weddle stated that he respects the rule of law and the decision of the court. He noted that the timing of his resignation is intended to facilitate a smooth transition and allow the city council to appoint a successor for the remainder of his term.
