Highest-Ranking US Army Officer Visits Sri Lanka for Defense Talks

Lieutenant General Joel Vowell, the Deputy Commanding General of US Army Pacific, arrived in Sri Lanka on September 29 for a three-day visit to enhance defense cooperation. Vowell is the highest-ranking US Army officer to visit the country. Through October 1, he will meet with senior Sri Lankan military officials to discuss readiness, joint military exercises, interoperability, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

As part of his itinerary, Vowell is scheduled to address future Sri Lankan military leaders on the role of professional armed forces in maintaining regional stability. The visit follows recent initiatives by the United States Embassy to train Sri Lankan personnel on the detection of nuclear smuggling and the evasion of maritime sanctions.

US Ambassador Eric Meyer stated that the visit reflects the growing strength of the security partnership between the two nations and a shared commitment to delivering results. Meyer noted that training together and sharpening the ability to respond to crises better prepares both nations to protect their people and strengthen security across the Indian Ocean.
