Amazon Leo Targets India for Satellite Broadband Expansion

Amazon Leo plans to launch satellite broadband services in India following the deployment of nearly 400 satellites and an investment exceeding $10 billion.

Amazon Leo is targeting India as a primary market for its satellite broadband services to connect underserved and unconnected communities. At the IAFI Space Policy Conference 2026 in New Delhi, company executives detailed a global low-Earth orbit network that has seen over $10 billion in investment since deployment began in April 2025.

Chris Hofer, the company's Head of International Spectrum Management and Strategy, reported that the venture has nearly 400 satellites in orbit and maintains a production rate of more than 15 satellites per week. To begin commercial operations in India, the company requires a Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite license from the Department of Telecommunications and authorization from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre.

Beyond broadband, the company aims to enter the direct-to-device satellite communications market by 2028. This expansion, which will provide voice, messaging, and data services directly to smartphones, follows the proposed acquisition of Globalstar.
