Helen Clark Calls for Review of Flawed New Zealand Election

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark is demanding a review of electoral and funding laws following a contested election result that remains too close to call.

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has called for a comprehensive review of New Zealand's electoral, voting, and campaign funding laws, asserting that observers could deem the recent election "flawed." Clark cited the early closure of voter enrolment as a primary concern, claiming the move disenfranchised many citizens.

Clark specifically criticized the distortion of the mixed-member proportional system through an overhang result. This mechanism allows the National Party to return 41 MPs, despite a party vote that would normally entitle them to only 35. She also highlighted a lack of transparency regarding campaign funding, pointing to support from the billionaire Mowbray family for the right-wing ACT and NZ First parties.

The final election result remains too close to call. Preliminary counts show the conservative coalition holding 67 seats against 64 for opposition parties and the Opportunity party. The final outcome will be determined on November 27 after the counting of approximately 400,000 special votes.
