CrossCountry Adds Eight Voyager Trains to Increase Rail Capacity

CrossCountry is adding eight Voyager trains to its long-distance fleet by May 2028, providing 60,000 additional seats per week across Great Britain.

The rail operator CrossCountry announced the addition of eight Voyager trains to its long-distance fleet to increase capacity and reliability across Great Britain. The expansion will provide approximately 60,000 additional seats per week, building upon 12 trains already introduced during 2024-25. The first of the new trains are expected to enter service in early 2027, with the full fleet operational by May 2028.

Secured through a partnership between the Department for Transport, Arriva, and the rolling stock leasing company Beacon, the trains will undergo refurbishment before entering service. This investment complements an ongoing refurbishment program for the Voyager and Turbostar fleets designed to enhance passenger comfort and onboard facilities. The expansion specifically benefits routes connecting cities including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Reading, Newcastle, Southampton, and Bournemouth.

Managing Director Shiona Rolfe stated the additional trains are an important step toward delivering a railway customers can rely on, noting they will provide greater flexibility and capacity to reduce crowding. Rail Minister Lord Hendy added that the service will provide more seats and greater resilience for major towns and cities from the north to the south.
