Micheál Martin Urges Dialogue as Drumcree Parade Sparks Tensions
Taoiseach Micheál Martin called for political dialogue after the Police Service of Northern Ireland halted a contested Orange Order parade in Portadown.
Renewed tensions have emerged in Drumcree, Portadown, after the Parades Commission granted the Orange Order permission to hold a limited parade down the predominantly nationalist Garvaghy Road for the first time in nearly 30 years. The Police Service of Northern Ireland halted several attempts by Loyal order members to begin the march over the weekend and into Monday morning to prevent mass protests.
Micheál Martin, the Taoiseach of Ireland, expressed deep concern over the situation and urged political parties to engage in dialogue to prevent the dispute from damaging community relations. He warned that the conflict should not be allowed to undermine the Stormont institutions.
While Sinn Féin has called on Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant to overturn the Parades Commission's decision, Martin advocated for a sensible, community-based resolution to the standoff.
