SpaceX Explores Orbital Data Centers Using Starship Rocket

SpaceX is investigating the deployment of space-based compute facilities to vertically integrate orbital infrastructure and potentially generate trillions in annual revenue.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is exploring the development of orbital data centers enabled by the Starship reusable rocket. The company aims to vertically integrate orbital infrastructure by combining launch services, satellite manufacturing, and communications into a single ecosystem.

These space-based compute facilities would utilize solar power to eliminate marginal fuel costs. However, the company faces significant technical challenges, specifically regarding hardware degradation in the space environment and the difficulty of cooling high-performance hardware in a vacuum.

Financial projections indicate that if the company can manage deployment costs and maintain a sufficient launch cadence to reach 500 GW of installed capacity, annual orbital compute revenue could reach $2 trillion.
