UK Hospitality Sector Offers 100,000 Jobs to Neet Youth

The UK government and hospitality businesses will provide 100,000 job placements for young people not in employment, education, or training over three years.

The Department for Work and Pensions and the UK hospitality sector have launched an initiative to offer up to 100,000 jobs to young people aged 18 to 24 who are not in employment, education, or training (Neet). Over the next three years, businesses including Wagamama, Nando’s, Burger King, Premier Inn, Fuller’s, and Mitchells & Butlers will provide placements of up to four weeks to help youth acquire initial work skills.

This program follows a review by former health secretary Alan Milburn, who warned that the number of Neet youth could reach 1.25 million within five years. Education Secretary Lucy Powell has simultaneously announced a review of school exclusion changes to prevent student disengagement and the risk of youth falling out of education.

The initiative arrives as the government considers overhauls to the welfare system to reduce the benefits bill. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has pressured the government to redirect these welfare funds toward defense spending.
