IF Metall Ends Three-Year Strike Against Tesla in Sweden

The IF Metall labor union announced it will end its strike against Tesla Inc. in Sweden effective August 19. The industrial action, which began in October 2023, was launched after the electric-car manufacturer refused to sign a collective bargaining agreement for its Swedish service operations.

The union terminated the strike without securing an agreement, stating that Tesla bought out the remaining workers involved in the protest. While direct employee participation remained low, the dispute triggered widespread sympathy actions across the Nordic region, disrupting port handling, postal deliveries, and vehicle servicing.

Union leadership characterized the outcome as a failure of the Swedish labor model, which typically relies on voluntary agreements between employers and unions rather than legislation. Officials accused Tesla of employing methods that have been off-limits in Sweden since the 1930s and engaging in systematic strikebreaking to bypass the collective bargaining process.
