China Invests 450 Million Yuan to Expand Pakistan Trade Hub

China is investing 450 million yuan to upgrade port facilities in Tashkurgan following a surge in year-round trade and tourism with Pakistan.

The Government of China is investing 450 million yuan to upgrade port facilities, modernize infrastructure, and expand the border economic cooperation zone in Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County. This investment follows the transition of the Khunjerab Pass to year-round operation in December 2024, which has transformed the Xinjiang region into a hub for economic and cultural exchange with Pakistan.

Cross-border activity has increased significantly, with over 55,000 visits recorded in the first three quarters of 2026. Trade volume has similarly surged; cargo throughput in the first seven months of 2026 already exceeded the total for 2025, with annual projections expected to surpass 100,000 tonnes. The Xinjiang Huayingtai International Trade Company now manages the transport of Pakistani goods through China for re-export to Central Asian markets.

The local economy is expanding through a growing tourism sector that employs approximately 6,000 people. This growth is supported by a border market featuring Pakistani cuisine and handicrafts. Li Yifeng, the Party chief of Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County, stated that the goal is to deepen economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
