NIH and Pentagon Sign Biodefense Research Partnership

The National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense signed a biodefense agreement, sparking accusations from Democrats that the deal diverts billions in research funds.

The National Institutes of Health and the United States Department of Defense signed an agreement to collaborate on pandemic preparedness and chemical and biological defense research. Signed by NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya and Department of Defense official Robert Kadlec, the partnership aims to align biodefense projects with public health missions as the NIH shifts its strategic focus away from these areas.

Congressional Democrats have criticized the arrangement, alleging it is a cash grab intended to bypass Congress. Representative Rosa DeLauro and Senator Patty Murray claim the agreement could divert up to $2 billion from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to the Pentagon. This controversy coincides with a stalled effort by the Trump administration to secure a $1.5 trillion budget increase for the Department of Defense.

White House spokesperson Kush Desai and Jay Bhattacharya denied the allegations of fund diversion. They asserted that the partnership is a project-by-project collaboration designed to improve the health of American citizens and military members.
