Sudanese Army Finds Mass Grave of 25 Civilians in Kurmuk

The Sudanese Armed Forces discovered mass graves containing the bodies of at least 25 civilians in Kurmuk, located in the Blue Nile region. The remains, which include women, children, and hospital workers, were found during clearing operations approximately one month after the national military retook the town following weeks of heavy fighting.

Kurmuk commissioner Abdel Aty Mohamed al Faki stated that the victims were executed near Jebel Fankat, a hilltop position previously used by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces to launch suicide drones. Local officials explicitly accuse the Rapid Support Forces of carrying out the killings during its occupation of the town. The Rapid Support Forces has not commented on the discovery.

This discovery follows a pattern of alleged atrocities by the paramilitary group, including reports from El-Fasher in November 2025. While the army has made recent gains in North Kordofan by recapturing Bara, Jabra al-Sheikh, and Um Sayala, the broader conflict continues to drive a humanitarian crisis. According to the World Health Organization, the fighting has killed approximately 40,000 people and displaced over 14 million.
