U.S. Oil Rig Count Rises to 603

The total number of active oil and gas drilling rigs in the United States rose to 603, an increase of 56 from the previous year, according to data released by Baker Hughes on October 9, 2026. Active oil rigs increased by six to reach 462, while gas rigs decreased by one to 132.

Regional activity showed growth in the Permian Basin, where the rig count rose by four to 274, while the Eagle Ford count remained steady at 49. Supporting this trend, Primary Vision reported that the Frac Spread Count rose to 196, marking the fourth consecutive weekly gain.

Production data from the Energy Information Administration indicates that U.S. crude oil production averaged 13.979 million barrels per day for the week ending October 2. This figure represents a year-over-year increase of 350,000 barrels per day.
