Bulgaria Plans Dike to Save Kozloduy Nuclear Plant
The Bulgarian government is planning a 300-meter dike to maintain cooling water levels at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant amid record-low Danube river levels.
The Government of Bulgaria is planning the construction of a 300-meter dike around the Kozloduy nuclear power plant to secure cooling water levels during a period of record-low water on the Danube river. Energy Minister Iva Petrova announced that the cabinet has initiated studies for the project, which may take up to two weeks to complete.
The drought caused the Kozloduy station to reduce output at one of its two 1,040-MW reactors by approximately 9% last Friday. This event marks the first output reduction in the plant's 52-year history. Petrova described the current conditions as extreme.
Similar water shortages have disrupted energy production across the region. Romania's sole nuclear plant at Cernavoda suffered a complete shutdown, prompting the Government of Romania to begin dredging and plan water-redirection structures. In Hungary, the Paks plant experienced power cuts, leading the Government of Hungary to build an underwater barrier to restore full capacity.
