Trump Administration Faces Backlash Over Inflammatory Social Media Posts

The Trump administration is under fire for posting inflammatory, Halloween-themed images of a fraud suspect and ethnic stereotypes on official government accounts.

The Trump administration is facing criticism for using official social media accounts to post inflammatory images days before the midterm elections. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins posted a photo of Mercedes Reshard New, a Black man accused of food assistance fraud, framed in fake Halloween costume packaging with the caption, "Some costumes come with a price tag. This one comes with a prison sentence." Simultaneously, the White House posted an image of a pumpkin carved with a sombrero.

These posts follow the arrest of New, a social media influencer known as "Shawty Dred," who federal prosecutors charge with fraudulently obtaining over $4 million in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits in Georgia by controlling more than 350 accounts. Marlo Graham, the Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, stated that New allegedly used the cash to "bankroll a life of luxury" instead of feeding families in need.

Critics describe the posts as part of a broader pattern of bigoted rhetoric and political targeting. The White House previously shared a deepfake video of House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries wearing a sombrero, despite earlier promises from Vice President JD Vance that "sombrero memes will stop." This activity coincides with increased fraud investigations and aggressive immigration enforcement, including a federal search of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar's home in Washington, D.C.
