FAA Grants Beta Technologies First VTOL Market Survey Certificate

Beta Technologies received a first-of-its-kind FAA certificate allowing the company to fly prospective customers in its electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted Beta Technologies a first-of-its-kind Special Airworthiness Market Survey Certificate on October 21, 2026. This authorization allows the company to conduct demonstration flights of its ALIA eVTOL aircraft, also known as the A250, for prospective commercial customers and stakeholders. The company conducted its first flight under this authorization on Tuesday, traveling from Plattsburgh to Burlington.

While the certificate enables Beta Technologies to showcase its technology, it is not a full commercial type certification. Consequently, the company cannot yet sell tickets to the general public or authorize commercial operations. CEO Kyle Clark stated that the company is approximately one year away from flying paying customers in conventional takeoff and landing electric aircraft and several years away from doing so with VTOL aircraft.

Beta Technologies is currently prioritizing cargo and medical logistics over passenger transport and is expanding its presence in New York, Vermont, and Florida. This milestone positions the company ahead of competitors Archer Aviation and Joby Aviation in securing this specific FAA authorization, although the firm continues to face challenges regarding cash burn and revenue streams. Clark noted that the company's vertical integration in manufacturing motors, inverters, and computers has helped it avoid traditional aerospace supply chain constraints.
