Taiwan Plans Han Kuang Drills Amid Chinese Military Activity

The Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of China announced that the island will conduct annual Han Kuang war games from August 5 to 14. These drills will test the relocation of weapons production lines and the conversion of civilian factories for military use. Specifically, the exercises will simulate the wartime relocation of the Armaments Bureau's 202nd Arsenal in Taipei and include joint navy and coast guard drills using live ammunition to protect sea lanes. For the first time, Taiwan will deliberately slow mobile internet speeds during the 10-day period to test emergency communication under bandwidth scarcity.

These preparations follow a period of heightened Chinese military activity. On July 28, 2026, Taiwan detected one People's Liberation Army aircraft and seven naval vessels operating around the island, with the aircraft entering the southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone. This follows similar activity on July 27 and 26, where China deployed multiple aircraft and naval vessels. The Republic of China Armed Forces monitored these movements and deployed defense assets in response.

Major General Lu Wen-yuan stated that the war games simulate a scenario where China uses routine exercises to mask preparations for a full-scale invasion. Meanwhile, the American Institute in Taiwan disclosed ongoing coordination between the U.S. and Taiwan coast guards to bolster maritime security cooperation amid increased Chinese coast guard activity around the island.
