Hackers Leak Data from 16 South Korean Financial Firms
South Korean financial firms including Daishin Securities and Bithumb reported data breaches affecting 100,000 customers amid a wave of attacks targeting PHP vulnerabilities.
A wave of hacking attacks has targeted 16 South Korean financial firms, resulting in the leak of approximately 100,000 sets of customer data. The Financial Services Commission reported the broader trend on Wednesday, as several major firms confirmed specific breaches.
Daishin Securities confirmed that hackers accessed the personal information of 38,490 customers, including names, email addresses, and mobile phone numbers, after the brokerage detected unauthorized access last week. Simultaneously, the cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb reported a hack of its in-house mobile system, and Mirae Asset Global Investments confirmed a hacking incident that is currently under inspection by financial authorities.
In response to the security threats, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency urged website operators to address PHP flaws. These vulnerabilities allow attackers to execute malicious commands without authentication, facilitating the unauthorized access seen across the financial sector.
