Mahmoud Abbas Postpones Palestinian Elections Until September 2027

President Mahmoud Abbas postponed Palestinian legislative and presidential elections to September 11, 2027, citing unsuitable conditions in Gaza, the West Bank, and east Jerusalem.

President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree postponing Palestinian legislative and presidential elections to September 11, 2027. The legislative vote was originally scheduled for November 2026. The Palestine Liberation Organisation's Executive Committee justified the delay by stating that conditions in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and east Jerusalem were not conducive to voting, specifically alleging that Israel refused to allow election materials and international observers into Gaza.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rejected these claims, describing the attempt to blame Israel as a "ridiculous lie" intended to help Abbas evade responsibility and accountability. The postponement comes amid reports of a new electoral alliance between Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and a bloc led by former Fatah security chief Mohammed Dahlan, which aimed to challenge Abbas's leadership.

While Hamas characterized the delay as a "step in the right direction," critics maintain the decision further erodes the credibility of the Palestinian Authority. This move extends a long period of electoral stagnation, as Palestinians have not held legislative elections since 2006 or presidential elections since 2005.
