Social Security Administration Prepares 2027 Benefit and Tax Adjustments
The Social Security Administration is calculating 2027 cost-of-living adjustments and earnings caps, with final figures expected in mid-October.
The Social Security Administration is preparing annual adjustments for 2027, including updates to monthly benefits, earnings limits for beneficiaries below full retirement age, and the maximum taxable earnings cap. Final figures are expected in mid-October, following the United States Department of Labor's release of September inflation data on October 14.
The Social Security Board of Trustees projects the taxable earnings cap will increase to $190,200, while earnings limits will rise to $25,200 and $67,200. Separate estimates for the 2027 cost-of-living adjustment range from 3.7% by analyst Katarina Johnson-Thompson to 3.8% by the Senior Citizens League.
These upcoming adjustments occur amid widespread public misunderstanding of the system. A survey by the Nationwide Retirement Institute found that 68% of adults are unaware of inflation adjustments, and 73% incorrectly believe payroll taxes apply to all earnings without a cap.
